چکیده

A s tudy has been made of rabbits vaccinated with living tubercle bacilli of human type and subsequently exposed to tuberculosis under conditions simulating the natural modes of human contagion. In view of the present world-wide s tudy of the prophylact ic inoculation of human beings with BCG and other vaccines, the desirability of a method by which the safety and efficacy of a given procedure can be tested in small labora tory animals is obvious. The method employed in the present experiments can be used to throw light upon this and other problems in tuberculosis.

On the Response of Genetically Resistant and Susceptible Rabbits to the Quantitative Inhalation of Human Type Tubercle Bacilli and the Nature of Resistance to Tuberculosis

If genetically resistant and susceptible rabbits inhale a certain number of human type tubercle bacilli, no tuberculosis in the lungs of the resistant animals is seen, as a rule several months after infection, while there is a variable and often extensive disease in the susceptible rabbits. The analogy to the presence or absence of active tuberculosis in man infected with the tubercle bacillus ...

The Correlation of a Biphasic Metabolic Response with a Biphasic Response in Resistance to Tuberculosis in Rabbits

We have found a phase of susceptibility associated with a reduced metabolic activity on the part of peritoneal mononuclear phagocytes taken from BCG-vaccinated rabbits. A second stage of heightened resistance to infection was found to be associated with a heightened metabolic activity. The period of susceptibility in BCG vaccination is primarily concerned with initiation of the infection and no...

The term "infection" as used in scientific literature includes the process of invasion by a pathogenic microorganism or virus and the pathological consequences of such an attack. The Germans often speak of "anfdlligkeit," i.e. the disposition to attack by a noxious agent as distinct from "hinfialigkeit" or the tendency to succumb to the morbid changes produced by the irritant. While one may exp...

The Prevalence of Latent Tuberculosis Infection and Smear Positive Pulmonary Tuberculosis in People with Household Close Contact with Tuberculosis in North of Iran

One of the recommended strategies for preventing tuberculosis is to screen high-risk populations with respect to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) infection. The aim of the present study was to investigate latent infection and active tuberculosis in people with close household contact. It was a cross-sectional descriptive, analytical study with the sample size of 668 people from homes with one in...
